You may obtain a card if you live in the East Meadow School District (EMSD).
Apply in person at the library. Bring two forms of identification. Acceptable identification is defined as follows:
1. A valid driver's license or other identification with a photo and a current residential address; and
2. A utility bill, credit card bill, current car registration, insurance card, property tax bill, mortgage statement, bank statement, typed lease, landlord's notarized letter, or school identification. All of the above must have your current East Meadow address.
Military personnel and residents of 200 Carman Avenue (residents at the hospital) are entitled to library cards. The patron must show current proof of residence.
Teachers employed by the EMSD are also eligible for a library card (without direct access to Nassau Co. Libraries) which will expire annually. A letter from the school stating that they are currently employed will be sufficient to establish eligibility.
Non-residents who own property in the East Meadow School District also may have a library card if they show current identification and a tax bill for the property they own. This library card will be valid for one year.
Patrons whose cards are issued for one year will be asked to verify their qualifying information annually. All other cardholders are required to verify their residency every three years by presenting one form of identification.
Children's library cards will be issued to children who have reached their fifth birthday or who are in kindergarten. Their parent/guardian must present the child's birth certificate and two forms of identification (their library card is acceptable) which show proof of residence in the school district. Children's library cards have full access to all children's material.
When a patron reaches the sixth grade, they are entitled to an adult card. They will be entitled to take out all material except R rated movies until the age of 18.

In order to listen to digital audiobooks you will need Windows Media Player version 9 or above installed on your home computer. You may also transfer downloaded eAudiobooks to your portable player. Your portable listening device must support secure WMA (Windows Media Audio) files. Unfortunately Mac and iPod users are not able to utilize our eAudiobook collection at this time.

There are two ways to renew books and other items: renew in person or renew online by clicking the
My Library Account link which appears on our Web site. You will need to type in your name, barcode, and PIN. As a default, your PIN is the last four digits of your telephone number. You may change your PIN at any time. Once logged in to your account, select the hyperlink 'items checked out' to see what you currently have checked out. You may select the titles individually and then click 'renew selected items' or you may 'renew all'. If the material is eligible for renewal, it will renew for two weeks. Your library card opens the door to the deep web. For current or general subjects, use the
EBSCOhost Masterfile or the
InfoTrac General Reference Center Gold database. Both can be accessed via the 'Research Databases' link which appears on the menu to the left. You will need your East Meadow library card’s barcode number to gain access to either resource.
In
EBSCOhost, choose the
MasterFile Premier database. This brings you to the basic search screen. Type in the subject you are seeking, being as specific as possible. For example, the subject ‘mathematics’ is too general producing a result list of 27,503 articles, while ‘Fibonacci numbers’ brings a result list of 106 articles which is more manageable.
Once connected to
InfoTrac, you are presented with an introductory screen where several databases are selected. You can leave it that way and click submit. This will enlarge the number of results you will have. If you want to perform a more specific search, uncheck ‘Select all’ and check
General Reference Center Gold. Using the same example as above: the subject ‘mathematics’ will result in 5,378 magazine articles, 9,036 academic journals, 379 reference titles and 6,015 news sources. The results for ‘Fibonacci numbers’ are as follows: 16 academic journals, 29 magazines, 1 reference source, 3 news sources.

Have you been looking for the deep or hidden web? Here it is – at your local public library. The
online catalog or
OPAC (online public access catalog) and a list of our
Research Databases will be your entry point. Use the subject headings to find links to various databases which will have articles on your subject. You will need your East Meadow library card’s barcode number to gain access to the research databases.
If you are unsure of where to start, try the
EBSCOhost MasterFile or the
Infotrac General Reference Center Gold.
