Library eBooks Now Available for Amazon Kindle
September 21st, 2011The East Meadow Public Library is very excited to announce Amazon Kindle compatibility with its Nassau Digital Doorway eBook collection. As a result of this update, most of the existing eBooks already in the collection may be read on all Kindle devices or by using free Kindle apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and other mobile devices.
Here is the process for checking out a library eBook for Kindle:
- Visit the library’s Nassau Digital Doorway website.
- Browse and check out a Kindle book using your valid East Meadow Public Library card.
- Click the ‘Get for Kindle’ button. This opens the Amazon.com website. You may be required to sign in with your Amazon.com account if you are not already logged in.
- Select a Kindle device or Kindle reading app. Click the ‘Get library book’ button and sync your device or app to download the book, or choose to send it to your device via USB.
- An active Wi-Fi connection is required for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. If your Kindle is not Wi-Fi capable or you do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, read Amazon’s instructions for transferring files via USB.
Kindle compatibility with library eBooks also takes full advantage of Amazon’s Whispersync technology. If you check out the eBook again at a later date or choose to purchase the eBook from the Kindle Store, all of your notes, bookmarks and highlights will be preserved. The last page read will also be synced between your Kindle and free Kindle reading apps.
In addition to Kindle, Nassau Digital Doorway provides support for all major desktop and mobile devices, including Windows, Mac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Sony Reader, NOOK, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.
For more details, please check the Help pages and FAQs at the Nassau Digital Doorway or contact the library's Head of Media Services, Karen Shaw-Widman at media@eastmeadow.info.

Summer Reading Program for Older Teens and Young Adults
May 17th, 2011
After last summer's successful “Soak Up a Good Read”, a summer reading program for high school graduates and young adults through age 23, Young Adult Services is continuing this program for the summer of 2011. Our 2011 theme is Novel Destinations. High school graduates and young adults through age 24 may register online at the East Meadow Public Library webpage beginning Monday May 16, 2011.
Registration is simple, just give the Library a few items of information about you, select a username and a password, receive your login information and start reading. You will be able to enter your reviews beginning Monday June 13, 2011. Sample reviews can be seen on the Novel Destinations homepage.
This year there are four prize levels, one for every three book reports through the first 12 reports. These incentives are little items for your summer fun at home or away. We will also have an End-of-Summer Raffle. For every three books read, you will receive a raffle ticket. There is no limit to how many books you may read.
Stop by the Young Adult Room and pick up helpful booklists and a special matching quiz, “Who Lives Where? Detective Match.” Four winners will be selected from all correctly answered drawings. Winners will receive a Novel Destinations travel mug.
You don’t have to go far just check out www.eastmeadow.info, click on the Novel Destinations link and begin your summer adventure to novel destinations.
